Paul, who graduated with us in 2025, recently took some time out to reflect on his journey through dentistry.
After nearly two decades in dentistry, it’s not uncommon to reach a crossroads, A moment to pause and ask, “Where do I go from here?” That moment came for me during the lockdown.
I had been practising for 18 years, splitting my time between an NHS practice and a private one in the Republic of Ireland. While the dual-system setup had kept things interesting for a while, I started to feel stale. I was 40 years old with more than 20 years of my career still ahead of me and the thought of continuing as I had been just didn’t sit right.
A New Challenge: Why Endodontics?
During that period of reflection, I realized I needed a challenge, something to reignite my passion for dentistry. That’s when I turned to endodontics. I wasn’t entirely sure it was the right path, but I knew I needed a spark, something to shake up the routine and push me forward.
Why simplyendo®?
I came across simplyendo® through social media, and it instantly appealed to me. As a general dental practitioner with three children, I couldn’t take time away from work or family to pursue a full-time program. I also wasn’t ready to commit fully to endodontics without testing the waters first.
What sealed the deal was a recommendation from a former colleague who had completed the programme. He told me that even if I didn’t end up specialising, the knowledge and skills I’d gain would significantly benefit my general practice. So, I enrolled in the 10-day programme and never looked back.
From the 10-Day Programme to an MSc
That 10-day course turned out to be more than just an introduction, it was a turning point. The balance of theory and practical training, the approachable and knowledgeable tutors, and the camaraderie with fellow students all created a powerful learning environment. It gave me the confidence and clarity to commit to further study. Today, I’ve just finished my MSc with simplyendo®.
How It’s Changed My Practice
The impact on my everyday practice has been profound. I now split my time between NHS work and a private referral practice where I focus on endodontics. I’ve found a new rhythm, one that energises me. It’s more than just a skill set; it’s a mindset shift.
I’m more motivated than I’ve ever been in my career. My understanding of dentistry has deepened, and I’ve seen improvement across the board not just in root canals, but in how I approach cases more holistically.
What I Loved Most About the Programme
One of the things I appreciated most was simply being able to take time out for myself. The days spent in Formby, connecting with other students and learning in a relaxed, supportive environment, were genuinely enjoyable.
Even beyond the classroom, the support has continued. The simplyendo® Facebook forum and the willingness of tutors and alumni to offer advice and guidance make it feel like an ongoing community, not just a course.
A Changed Perspective
Before the programme, root canals were something I approached with caution. Now, I actually look forward to them. The programme didn’t just give me techniques it gave me confidence. There’s still plenty to learn (there always is), but I now tackle endodontic cases with curiosity instead of apprehension.
Final Thoughts: Would I Recommend It?
Absolutely. I’d recommend the 10-day programme to any dentist whether you’re newly qualified or have years of experience behind you. For younger dentists, it’s a brilliant way to develop quality clinical habits early. For those of us further on in our careers, it’s a chance to reignite that professional spark.
Starting the programme at 40 has opened up new doors for me and reawakened my passion for dentistry. Whether you’re considering a full qualification or just want to see if endodontics is right for you, simplyendo® is a fantastic place to start.
