Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Matthew works within a mixed NHS and private general practice, delivering a wide range of treatments to a diverse patient base. Like many general dentists, endodontics was always part of day-to-day practice, but it wasn’t until later in his career that it truly became a focus.

A turning point in practice

Nearly ten years after qualifying, a shift in his clinical work sparked a renewed interest in endodontics. Taking over a predominantly private list made up of older patients brought new challenges, with a high demand for root canal treatments. Many of these cases involved age-related complexities such as calcified canals and previously treated teeth.

Faced with the choice of referring a large number of patients elsewhere or developing the skills to manage these cases in-house, the decision became clear. With an existing interest in endodontics, this felt like the right moment to invest in further training and take that next step.

Choosing simplyendo®

Flexibility was a key factor when choosing where to study. Balancing professional responsibilities with personal commitments meant that any course needed to fit around an already busy schedule. The structure of the simplyendo® programme offered exactly that, making it a natural choice.

A renewed confidence and direction

Since completing the programme, the impact on daily practice has been significant. Not only has there been a renewed enjoyment of endodontics, but also a noticeable increase in confidence when managing more complex cases.

This has led to a shift in the focus of the practice, with more endodontic treatments being carried out and an increasing number of referrals being accepted. What simply began as a way to better support existing patients has grown into a key area of clinical interest.

The experience beyond the classroom

Travelling to Formby for teaching sessions was a highlight of the programme. Access to high-quality facilities, combined with the support of knowledgeable and approachable tutors, created an environment that was both engaging and supportive.

Equally valuable was the opportunity to connect with like-minded colleagues. Sharing experiences, challenges and progress over the duration of the course added another layer to the learning experience.

A change in mindset

The programme didn’t just develop clinical skills, it also reshaped the way endodontics is approached. Whether building confidence with the fundamentals or progressing to more complex cases, the course offers something for every level.

For anyone considering further training, the advice is simple: be prepared to put the work in. The more you invest in the process, the more you’ll gain from it.

Recognition and looking ahead

Alongside clinical development, there have also been academic achievements. As a member of the British Endodontic Society, the opportunity arose to apply for the ‘Aspiring Endodontic Researcher’ prize, open to those who have recently completed a research-based dissertation or systematic review.

Submitting the dissertation felt like a worthwhile step, and it has since led to being awarded the prize. The award will be presented at the Autumn Scientific Meeting in Oxford, with a further opportunity to present the research at a spring meeting next year.

It’s an exciting milestone, and one that reflects both the effort put into the programme and the opportunities that can follow.
